About Morse Code
Morse code is a method of encoding text characters as sequences of dots (·) and dashes (−). Developed in the 1830s-1840s for use with the telegraph, it remains relevant today in aviation, amateur radio, and assistive technology.
Timing Rules
- Dot: 1 unit of time
- Dash: 3 units of time
- Between symbols: 1 unit gap
- Between letters: 3 units gap
- Between words: 7 units gap
Common Uses Today
- Aviation: Navigation beacons (VOR/NDB)
- Amateur Radio: CW (Continuous Wave) mode
- Accessibility: Assistive communication devices
- Military: Emergency signaling
Fun Fact: The distress signal "SOS" (··· −−− ···) was chosen because it's distinctive and easy to recognize, not because it stands for "Save Our Ship" or "Save Our Souls."
