About Morse Code

Morse code is a method of encoding text characters as sequences of dots (·) and dashes (−). Developed in the 1830s-1840s for use with the telegraph, it remains relevant today in aviation, amateur radio, and assistive technology.

Timing Rules

  • Dot: 1 unit of time
  • Dash: 3 units of time
  • Between symbols: 1 unit gap
  • Between letters: 3 units gap
  • Between words: 7 units gap

Common Uses Today

  • Aviation: Navigation beacons (VOR/NDB)
  • Amateur Radio: CW (Continuous Wave) mode
  • Accessibility: Assistive communication devices
  • Military: Emergency signaling
Fun Fact: The distress signal "SOS" (··· −−− ···) was chosen because it's distinctive and easy to recognize, not because it stands for "Save Our Ship" or "Save Our Souls."
